Bournemouth Music Competitions Festival

“If you were milking your ending, it was a big dairy”! The amusing words of adjudicator David Kirby-Ashmore as he congratulated Surrey Harmony on the package we presented during the Barbershop Class at the Bournemouth Music Competitions Festival.

We were pleased to be awarded a “distinction” in the Songs from the Shows class and an “outstanding” in the Barbershop class

He made us all laugh by telling us we had managed to go slightly sharp in one song – now THAT really is a first! Around 45 of us travelled to a miserable and wet Bournemouth to take part in two classes, Songs from the Songs and Barbershop. We came away with two 2nd places, losing our to our fellow Sweet Adelines Chorus “Spinnaker” in the first and to the Men’s Chorus “Royal Harmonics” from Windsor in the second.

David Kirby-Ashmore (pictured presenting Jenny with a certificate)It seems 2007 is our year to be runner’s up! However we were pleased to be awarded a “distinction” in the Songs from the Shows class and an “outstanding” in the Barbershop class, which attracted 12 entries. It was great to be able to see choruses from BABS and LABS, and show our appreciation for their performances. David Kirby-Ashmore (pictured presenting Jenny with a certificate) had many nice things to say about Surrey Harmony, even describing our ballad as “exquisite”. He made us all laugh by telling us we had managed to go slightly sharp in one song – now THAT really is a first!

Surrey Harmony was also represented in the Quartet Class by Hunky Dory and by Twist! – featuring our Assistant Director Valerie. The date is in the diary for next year’s Festival. Let’s hope the weather is a lot better.
