True Brit

Amy Winehouse and Katie Melua are former pupils, X factor winner Leona Lewis also went there. Now Surrey Harmony’s youngest member is set to develop her musical talent at The Brit School in Croydon.

13 year old Lead Sophie Doughty has won a place at the Performing Arts and Technology School where she will study Music from this August. 13 year old Lead Sophie Doughty has won a place at the Performing Arts and Technology School where she will study Music from this August.

Here’s her story...

“I auditioned in March. I had to compose a piece of music, take a theory test and perform a song. I chose “Stormy Weather”. It was strange because there were lots of people all doing different kinds of music. One of them was even playing the bagpipes!

I was more nervous at the interview part of the audition. They asked me to mark my performance out of 10. I said 8, and they said that showed I was confident.

One of the interviewers was interested in my barbershop singing so I told them all about Surrey Harmony. I have been with the chorus now for two years and I am also a member of the National Youth Choir as well as choirs at my current school Croham Hurst. I thought I’d failed to get a place as some friends had already heard they had got in.

Then one day I got home from school and my Mum started handing me Post-it Notes with just one word on them. Finally when I got enough to make the sentence it read “You have got into the Brit School”. I just cried I was so happy. Singing will be my main subject, but I am also having piano lessons at the moment and teaching myself to play the guitar. I want to be a professional singer. Amy Lee who fronts Evanescence is my inspiration.

You have got into the Brit School

After I have finished at The Brit School I want to go to University to study music, possibly at Guildford. Although The Brit School is aimed at people wanting a career in the Arts, we still have to do all the other subjects as well. I will still have to do Maths and Science, but there will be lots of Music. I think it’s going to be hard work, but great fun and I just can’t wait for the new term to August”.
