Surrey Harmony Women’s Barbershop Chorus

Life in Surrey Harmony

Emma RileyI've always sung in the shower, bands, shows (anywhere really) and people are always catching me crooning away to myself!

Three years ago I was looking for somewhere to sing that would be both challenging and fun so, when a flyer came through the door for a local group's show at the theatre, I looked them up.

Surrey Harmony is a women's barbershop chorus singing four-part a cappella harmony - but unlike other choral groups, we perform with choreography! The four sections are tenor, the really high ones, lead, the ones that generally sing the tune, bass, all those lovely low notes and baritone (that's me!) who get every other note in between and get the best harmony lines. They are such a fantastic group of women of all ages, from all walks of life and all different backgrounds of singing, including some that have sung for years and others who have never sung with other people in their lives before. What has struck me most is how friendly and fun they all are, a bubbly, open bunch of people ready to welcome you.

Surrey HarmonyAs part of Sweet Adelines International, a women's barbershop organisation with regions throughout the world, we enter the UK Quartet of Nations annual competition of choruses and quartets. This year I am extremely proud to say that we won gold, making us eligible to represent the UK at the International Convention in October 2006 ... in Las Vegas!

Diva Las VegasTo really show the big American choruses what we can do, we are feverishly recruiting, so if any of you (sorry gents but it's ladies only!) fancy a trip to Las Vegas with some great fun along the way, we would love you to join. We also need to raise a considerable amount of funds to cover travel expenses so if anyone would like to sponsor us or has money-raising ideas we would love to hear from you.

Sin city here I come!
