Surrey Harmony Women’s Barbershop Chorus

Champion Fundraisers

Surrey Harmony members have been lucky enough to compete 5 times at the International Convention, but each time the cost of going escalates. As usual everyone in the Chorus and our supporters helped to swell the coffers. But this time around the Chorus as two fund raising “champions”.

Judith has raised £3,000 by using Ebay to sell items no longer wanted by Surrey Harmony members.Judith has raised £3,000 by using Ebay to sell items no longer wanted by Surrey Harmony members. “It all began with an umbrella that was among some items given to me by a friend who told me I could sell everything to raise some cash for the Chorus. I made over £100 profit on that first item and it’s just spiralled from there”, says Judith.

Now Judith is totally hooked on Ebay checking the site several times a day to see how bids are progressing. She has even started going to auctions and doing car boot sales although sometimes they are more profitable than others.

“The Chorus members have been great in donating things to sell”, says Judith. “Old sheet music, children’s games and books are popular, along with named pottery, wooden animals and paperweights. I’ve sent stuff all over the world, often telling the buyer that I am helping to raise money for Surrey Harmony to go to Las Vegas. I even sent a cut-throat razor to South Korea!

Jean explains how her 400 Club works.By the time we travel to Las Vegas Jean’s fund raising project will have raised £6,000 for Chorus funds. Jean explains how her 400 Club works. “Each person who contributes £10 a month has a number which relates to the bonus ball number drawn each Saturday in the National Lottery. Each person with that number gets £30. Then once a month we have a prize draw at Chorus when a numbered ball is drawn from the big orange sack. The person with that number wins £300”.

The Club has 100 participants, not as many as Jean had hoped for originally, hence the name. “We have had support from 12 Choruses in the UK region and for that we are very grateful, also from our FISH members (Friends Involved with Surrey Harmony) and supporters like Edwina Currie and friends and family. City of Roses Chorus in Aberdeen has been the luckiest Chorus and we’ve have had 52 individual winners so far.”

Jean hopes to continue with the 400 Club in the future providing there is enough support. Oh, and if you are wondering what the most lucky numbers have been – in the Weekly Draw they were 7, 12, 31 & 42. In the £300 monthly draw they were 2,36,69 & 84.

Well Done to Judith and Jean for their hard work in raising
so much money for our Las Vegas funds.
